I realise with the nationwide organised resistance to OHV use this is a sticky subject but Utah seems to be more friendly to off roading than say Oregon where we're from and many other states. With that said we have a 50 inch RZR but have friends with over 50 inch machines that would love to ride more of the Piaute  trail system and hence more jamboree rides also.Last year because of doors, new wheels & tires we were at 56 inches and thus limited to about a third of the trails, fun but still a bummer. This year I modified our 56 inch doors to 50 and will go back to stock wheels & tires bringing our machine into compliance for the jam. I'm not sure who to contact but there must be interest in just a little widening of more trails that would sure be nice. I hope this doesn't bring out any hostility from our quad riders as we are also in that group. There are rides like Rock canyon that perhaps would never be practicable for over 50 but I think most could be done without a lot of work/money but if there was a significant hassle perhaps a bit extra say $10 from over 50 machines might be one answer. Well the idea's out there what does everybody think?

Yes Utah is very very frindely to off roading. This is why this will be our 9th year at the jamboree. My ride is a ATV, but I have no problems sharing the trails with UTV's. I think they are a cool machine. There is a lot of rides this year that are UTV frindely. I would not like to see them go crazy with a dozer on the trails. Widening a little would be nice as long as it does not take away the beauty of the trail system. Come on September get here..

Hi,

My observation has been that the under 50 group is just fine with the over 50 group.

I'm not sure who or what was used as criteria for deciding what trails would be 50 and under or the other way around.  I do know that the USFS is pretty rigid in this.

Kevin may have more information on this.  I'll see if I can find anything out.

Hi, Tamy here. I agree with Omar. Most under 50 don't mind at all that the over 50 are out there with us. The more the merrier (as long as everyone keeps up-ha ha). To me, they aren't all that different. Sure you can sit side by side, but in the long run, we are all out there to see the beauty of the great outdoors. I also see the side of USFS. They are accountable for keeping that beauty. It would be nice for some of the trails to be opened up to the over 50, but you would have to be careful about those who would try to get even wider in (ie: truck, jeeps, etc.). Luckily, there are several rides (more it seems this year) for those over 50, and I hope you can come and enjoy them. I'm with you Maz, come on September!!!

I intend to bring a Razor (maybe an "S") to the jam.  I counted 34 rides out of the 69 listed that are UTV Friendly.  Should be a hoot!  This year, my wife will have a better time as she will have a more comfortable ride.  (A 90 mile ride two-up on an ATV can be a real test of a marriage)  I am looking forward to sharing the trail with all widths.  is it September yet?

Welcome ''Dirt bag''
Unfortunately we must wait about six months but it promises to be a dandy. I am always glad to see new participants and know you and your wife will find it a blast. Gerry
PS it's always a good idea to make reservations as soon as possible

Hey GTR,
Sorry it took so long for me to find the reply key...I've been spending all my time on "Craig's List", looking for that special RZR S. (That would be the one with ALL the nifty upgrades, low hours and dirt cheap).  I beginning to think that I may have to reassess my criteria.  Never fear, we will have the machine we covet, even if it turns out to be a stock RZR (not an "S").  All the rides we're signed up for are UTV Friendly, but if the machine winds up narrower than an "S" model, we'll see about going on other rides that have a 50" restriction. (assuming they aren't full)
Is it September yet?

Hi to all:

I'm another returnee to the Jamboree. My third year. By the way, I'm also from Northern California, in the Gold Country east of Sacramento.

I'm pleased they are broadening the appeal for UTVs. I think it lets more people enjoy the beautiful Utah country and the Jamboree. I've been on many rides and founds the UTVs seem to keep up very well and they seem to have a good time. And by the way, a couple of times at rest stops on the trail, we have found ourselves parked in rain or sleet. I envied the UTV folks sitting there under their roof. Made me wonder who was the smart one.

Anyway, I'm getting anxious for September to get here. Enough so that I'm attending a couple of other jamborees in the meantime.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Richfield

Bill

I, and many of my friends are some of those people that do not want over 50" vehicles on ATV trails. The reasoning is simple. There are many great narrow trails just wide enough for the ATV. More and more use by vehicles over 50" widens the trail out so pretty soon it is more like a jeep route. It is fact, it has been happening. Why do you think bicycles and dirt bikers like single track? Because it is narrow. Same for ATVers, we like narrow trails and want them to stay that way. Places that are already wide I don't have a problem with, but don't ruin our narrow trails because you prefer a side-by-side.

I was at the jamboree the first year that UTV's started showing up.  At that time no one worried about the width of the trails.  I was quite impressed with how the UTV's managed the trails.

I personally have no problem with sharing our two track with UTV's.  I have no idea where the 50" rule came from, but they sure enforce it here in UT.  I can only assume that it has something to do with keeping jeeps, etc. out.

Can't wait until Sept...

I have to agree with HvrLvr on the 50" trails.  I like narrow trails and welcome any legal sxs to ride along.  However, if you look at the number of sxs vehicles built and the different widths available, limits must be established.  If we don't establish and enforce a width limit every trail will be back to full sized roads.  IMO
